Tensional stress.
or elongates rock bodies is known as tensional stress (tendere = to stretch) (Figure 10.2C).
Along divergent plate boundaries where plates are moving apart, tensional stresses stretch and lengthen rock bodies.
Compressional stresses associ- ated with convergent plate boundaries tend to shorten and thicken Earth's crust by folding, flowing, and fault- ing, whereas tensional stresses along divergent plate boundaries tend to lengthen rock bodies by displacement along faults in the upper crust and by ductile flow at depth.
Normal faults tend to be associated with tensional stresses that pull rock units apart, thereby lengthening the
